Dear Members,

My name is Frank C. Everards I am a volunteer for a small museum in The Netherlands. We get some donations from time to time. I would like to ask your help in getting the story straight with the artifacts. Does anyone recognize this? We believe it is a HJ band. But does anybody know anything more about this band and badge?

Sincerely,

Frank C. Everards

Hi Frank and welcome to the forum. The triangle was known as Gebietsdreieck and signified the wearer's affiliation to (in the case of your triangle) Obergebiet West / Gebiet Köln-Aachen. Females wore the same triangle but in silver/black. If you have any more questions please let us know.

Should have a look in my files to
know when the small band was introduced.

Thank you all so very much! Means a lot. I help out at a very small museum as a volunteer. I have been dealing with veterans for 20 years now but determining if artifacts are real is a whole new thing for me! Can anyone tell me what Gelendeportwart means? A terrain guard?

The Geländesportwart had a particular responsibility for the conduct of Geländedienst within his unit. The purpose of Geländedienst was to prepare HJ boys for later service with the Wehrmacht. It went hand in hand with the Schießdienst (.22 cal shooting) and both areas increased in scope and intensity after the outbreak of war. "Geländedienst" described a group of activities including:

mapreading and navigation
ground appreciation
fire orders
reconnaissance
camouflage
making reports, diagrams and field models
etc
