The post-1939 appointment system used by the HJ and DJ can be a little confusing so here's a small 'ready reference'.

You can split the TR period into 2 parts for lanyards:

1933 to 1939 - Lanyards denoted rank only.

1939 to 1945 - Lanyards denoted appointment*.

*BDM and JM lanyards were not affected.

So, period 1 is straightforward as each rank had a matching lanyard. In the second period which began on the 24th of March 1939 there was now a rank and an appointment. This meant that a person could be assigned to a position above or below his rank without actually having that rank.

To illustrate this here's an example:

Kameradschaftsführer Schmidt is placed in charge of a Schar but is not promoted to Scharführer. This would be shown on the uniform as follows: Kameradschaftsführer shoulder straps with green Scharführer lanyard.

A further change introduced by this regulation was that only those leaders who were actually in charge of a formation were permitted to wear a lanyard. For example, the treasurer of a Gefolgschaft who had previously worn a lanyard by virtue of his rank was now not permitted to wear the lanyard.

Rank ranges

The rank ranges for each appointment were organised as you can see on the graphic below. The regulations go into a lot of detail on these appointments so I've distilled them down to the main ones.

Hopefully this will be of help to anyone looking to put a set of insignia together.

Data for the DJ later..
