This may seem like a silly question but why were some lanyards worn from the shoulder strap to the left pocket and others were worn from button to left pocket - yes I'm a newbie!?

Hi,

this was governed by the regulations which state that the only male lanyards not to be worn between left shoulder button and left chest pocket button were:

HJ Kameradschaftsführer and DJ Jungenschaftsführer.
Department head on the Bann or Jungbann staff (Stellenleiter im Bannstab / Jungbannstab).

Both of the above were worn between the left chest pocket button and a button at the same height on the shirt (or jacket) front.

Here is a fine example for the wear of a male lanyard between the left chest pocket and the same height button on the shirt as gary described it.

...and the the wear of the lanyard up to the shoulder button.
