I've mentioned this in some posts in the past but until now I wasn't able to give an exact date for the regulation that moved the position of the knife on the belt from the front left to the left hip.
The knife was originally worn at front left (see attachment) when the HJ/DJ Fahrtenmesser was introduced early in 1933 but after the units had reported a number of accidents where the knife handle and the scabbard had caused soft tissue injuries the RJF published a notice on the 7th of October 1933 asking all units to report on similar incidents in their areas of responsibility. They were also asked to submit proposals to resolve the problem. As a result of this and on the 2nd of May 1934 the RJF ordered that the knife should now be moved around to the left hip where it of course stayed for the remainder of the TR period.
Seems an odd request to ask for ideas on where to put the knife. Surely someone at the RJF could have come up with the brainwave of moving it around to the left a bit..
