I would be grateful for opinions on this knife. It has an antler handle, by Puma, the blade has an enamelled crest inscribed Reichsparteitag Nürnberg. I attach some pics.
Thanks,
Peter.

Thats the same one that Angola used in his 1971 book, marked 6311, image here.
Here is an interesting thread for you.
My opinion? Fantasy piece of pooh. (Not the actual knife or sheath though, genuine item all the way, with a nice Warenzeichen number on it :) just the fantasy etching and painting.
Other knives like the HJ knife are doctored with this etching. Ruined a hunting knife imo.

Thanks Metallwarenfabrik and Stuart,
Thanks for the links Metallenfabrik, which I found very interesting. I note that this particular knife does not have the Eagle and Swastika on the blade like the one in Angola's book, and the pommel one this one differs from those in the linked thread, them having a HJ type pommel this one having a Hunting Knife pommel. Indeed this does in fact support your opinion of it being a case of fantasy fakery. I think that the fact that these were unheard of until the 80's and the fact that there is no photographic evidence of them in wear during the TR period is a powerful argument that seems irrefutable.
I am amazed that dealers such as Wittmann, are involved in peddling these items.
Thanks,
Peter.

Yes its a shame, because there are also genuine HJ knives known that have been ruined by this horrible etching & painting. They were pictured a while back in the Internationales Militaria Magazin, as genuine of course, but dont let that put you off, lots of what is written in that particular Militaria magazine is nothing more than BS. I actually found a lot of older issues of that mag last week when i was looking for something else, and some of the articles, contain not a single footnote, or a shred of information at all, just an image with a pretty story.

Wittmann would sell himself if he thought there was a dollar in it for him. There are plenty of older threads on this forum about Wittmann and Johnson, and the utter rubbish that they occasionaly list as genuine. The danger with Wittmann, is that he likes to try and alter history, for financial gain. Just listing a fake, OK, most dealers do, but to go and compliment your fake with a complete BS story, and twist basic historical fact so that your item fits.. well it deserves a spanking at the very least!

I imagine that you must have paid a lot of money for this hunting knife, what with it being in-print and all?

Hi Metallwarenfabrik,
It's amazing that so called reputable dealers will do this kind of thing. I have not purchased it yet, it is coming up in auction. I will not be purchasing it now.
Thanks very much for your help and advice.
Peter

Hi Metallenwarenfabrik and Stuart,
I thought that I would let you know what the knife made in auction. It went for £95 hammer which would have made it about £145 including commission and other charges. So not big bucks.
Peter.

Thanks for the heads-up, any possible way of adding images of the sale? or a link?

i think the price it has sold for reflects well what most people think of these daggers , a standard hj will fetch a lot more than that

Hi Metallwarenfabrik and Stuart,
I agree with you that the price reflects what the majority of people think of these knives, but of course these are provincial auctioneers rather than specialist military ones. I have posted a link to the auction house for you Metallwarenfabrik www.wingetts.co.uk/
Thanks,
Peter.
