Cheers .............Steve

Haye Steve

cheers mate ye the motor hj album is a good one never saw many before

the last pic i think you mite be on 2 some thing there the dagger looks like a stiletto type Defoe not normal issue the dam sun in the pic is masking the buckle so hard to make out possible Italian youth thy look more like it :yo:

Very nice Steve :thumb: Your early youth organisation is the BDJ (Bund Deutscher Jugendvereine). This was a youth organisation linked to the larger evangelical youth movements. Christian will be able to tell us more I'm sure.

The dagger may just be something he happened to have as it was quite common for the boys to wear their own knives in the early period - particularly the boys who had moved to the HJ/DJ from the other youth organisations.

Garry is right as so often

Yes, the group seems to have started as a Bund Deutscher Jugendvereine BDJ group. The BDJ was mainly protestant and close to the Scouts. They existed till late 1933 and then resinged from working with Members younger than 18. So many former members - if not even whole groups - probably joined the HJ or the Jungvolk. Their sign is visible on the pennant and painted on one of the tents. I attached a picture of their membership pin.

The knive is a expensive and very decorative knive as it was used in Finnland and Sweden. Both countries were often visited by groups of the youth movement in the early thirties. I attached also three photos to illustrate this.

This type of knifes are called Sami knifes. They were used by the Sami people living in the northern part of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The Sami people are known for reindeer heerding and their traditional clothing and tents.

I had a small Sami knife as a young scout. Unfortunately it dosn't excist any longer.
