I have just received a Segelflieger - Glider - photoalbum from 1936/1937.

Here's a preview, better scans later.

The last photo is the "Hans-Mallon-Ehrenmal der HJ auf Rügen" Hans-Mallon HJ memorial on Rügen.

Fluggelände "Saarmund"

Here are the first photos from the album. The album belonged to Arno Hübner from Berlin (born around 1920).
Fluggelände Saarmund.

On the Saarmunder Mountain, about 20 km south-west of Berlin, a gliding site was created in the 1920s .

From 1933 to 1944, glider training of Flieger-HJ took place here.

Zögling 35.
The Zögling 35 was a simple lightweight glider for basic flight instruction. It was designed to start with rubber ropes, a common way to start a glider in the years short after WWI. It was designed by Alexander Lippisch who became famous by his design Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, a rocket drive flying wing.

Rubber rope start of gliders.
The primary/simple gliders were generally launched by bungee cord, whereby a rubber rope was arranged in a "V" with the glider at the apex. The ends of the rope were pulled by hand to launch the glider from a slope.

A-Kursus in Rhinow, 2 - 26 September 1937

The Stölln/Rhinow airfield is located in Havelland in Brandenburg. Described by the operators as the oldest airfield in the world. The history of aviation here began around Easter 1894, when Otto Lilienthal began to use the Gollenberg for his flight tests.

As part of the promotion of gliding at the time of National Socialism, the construction of a flight school was started in January 1936, and it began operating the same year. The buildings were largely destroyed during the ensuing Second World War.
