Sicherungslichter für marschierende Einheiten

Front white reflector

In the "Uniformen der HJ" picture it shows a front 'white' reflector on the belt.

I think I have one in my collection. I say 'think' because I have not done any research on it at all, so whether it is HJ or even period correct.........?

The poster/leaflet/page from Lauri gives me hope it is good, as it looks like the middle item, but unfortunately I cannot read any of the text. Any chance of a better or zoomed in picture of that? (edit. The picture shows I have the buckles fitted incorrectly!)

The only real clue is the makers stamp

Hello Peter. Yes, front reflector from the 1930s-40s. I'm sincerely confused but I have no better scan of the leaflet.
Thank you for having shown us this period item.

I found something on these in the regulations. Reflectors strips were mentioned in RJF Verordnungsblatt 66 dated 8.11.1933. Gebrüder Franke AG, Mühlhausen / Thüringen is listed as the sole producer at this point. They made three types:

1. a strip of three white reflectors with two short attachment straps. RM1,58 (this item was worn at the front of the column and was attached to the marcher's belt cross-strap).
2. a strip of three orange reflectors with two short attachment straps. RM2,03 (this item was worn at the rear of the column and could be attached to the wearer's belt or pack).
3. a long strap (44cm) with one white and one orange reflector to indicate the side of a column. RM1 (this was worn on the upper arm such that the orange reflector faced the rear and the white reflector forwards. It was worn by all marchers who were nearest to the centreline of the road).

Thank you Garry for taking the time to search for information about this equipment.

Thanks Garry,

I knew I had seen it before mentioned. The rest of the order tells
how to wear (as is noted), but also what needed to be done at night
in relation to cars etc. (the use of flags and lanterns). Order 283 was
also meant for marching by girls.

The reason for the introduction were various accidents at highroads.

The order for this equipment came five days after an order for the
SA (I Nr. 1647/33) from November 1933. It was mentioned there
were more concerns that were able to deliver a good quality product.
March 25, 1935 an extensive order was published about how to act
and what to do. The description was quite in-depth. Extra measures
were taken, due to the so-called Reichsstrassenverkehrsordnung.
Extra lights were then available. It is possible and even more likely
this was taken over by the HJ also.

Not being HJ, but for those interested:
for the Reichsarbeitsdienst another system was introduced.
It was in 1939 in-depth described in the "Bekleidungsvorschrift
für den Reichsarbeitsdienst
" (RAD. Dv.18 from January 16, 1939).

With number 89 the system, known as Marschsicherungsgerät,
was described with over three pages. The system used batteries
(Batteriekasten) with a wire and switch, worn in the front at left.

For those who own the book "Labor Organizations of the Reich"
from the well-known authors couple, can have a look at page 305
where somewhat better photos can be found!

haha no wonder he's smiling. The Facebook/Youtube/Instagram "look at me!!" generation would love that for their mobile phones and GoPros.
