The first picture is what Saris describes as the "first pattern or 1933 pattern" lettering. Note the early wide lettering used to fill in the bottom space and the "i" with the swallow tail top typical of first pattern lettering triangles. The second and third pictures are what he describes as "late war" examples. Note the thin lettering of lesser quality than earlier types. Also note that with the last two there are slight differences in the lettering. Period photos exist of the late pattern in wear, but according to Saris these may possibly be reproduced also. The tell is in the weave or Maschinenbandstuhlwebverfahren (mechanical tape-loom procedure). The material used in 1934 contained 75 threads per 1.0cm, and in 1936 there were 80 threads per 1.0cm. The lettering contained 38 threads per 1.0cm in 1934 and was increased to 40 in 1936. Later pattern triangles had fewer threads due to wartime shortages. This sort of explains the lesser quality later pattern triangles, and it's really evident when shown next to the first pattern. The quality is just not there in the later period pieces. I'm still looking for the "1936 pattern" lettering to complete this set.

Excellent info Darin. Thanks for sharing it.

Here's the 1936 pattern lettering to keep you going until you find that triangle :)
