Hello collectors.

Question: I want to collect Austrian HJ related items like the HJ edelweiss. I tried looking for a list of all the district triangles patches with photos and their location/country, but couldn't. What are the Austrian district triangles that edelweiss would have been worn.
Thanks,

Lewis

Here's another nice completed set from Gebiet Südost where Michael has used a map to show the locations :thumb:

Gebiet Südost HJ BDM sleeve triangle collection complete

The Edelweiss was also worn in Gebiet 19 Hochland (triangle: Süd/Hochland).

I have a follow up question as I also want to collect DJ related items. How do the DJ rune patches work? Could any Austrian DJ members wear any colour of the 6 patches?

No, the Oberbann system of colours did not apply to Austria because the HJ was illegal there from 1933 to 1938. The Oberbann system (the different colours of sleeve rune) was removed as a structure in 1934 and with it the rune colours less red/white which became the rune used by all DJ and white/black which came to be used by the DJ at the NPEA schools. From the time Hitler annexed Austria in 1938 all DJ then wore the standard red white rune or white/black if attending an NPEA.

Hugely appreciate the information! So would that be the white with black rune or black with white rune for attending an NPEA? Or both?

Thanks!, last question. What would the black with white rune been worn for then?

Here is a scan showing the rune patches (rows one and two) as they were used prior to the removal of the Oberbann:

As you can see, black with white rune denoted membership of Oberbann 5.

Once again thanks for the help. Will be on the look out soon for a Oberbann 1 and Oberbann 6 rune patch for my slowly growing Austrian HJ/DJ collection.

Yes, that's right Wim. From that same reference:

Oberbann 1 Alpenland-West
Oberbann 2 Alpenland-Süd
Oberbann 3 Niederösterreich

Oberbann 1 certainly still existed until Aug 1934 but with the NSDAP being banned in Austria and the removal of the Oberbann as a structure by the RJF in Germany in 1934 I can't see any further expansion above three Oberbanne.

I think it should be mentioned that not all districts had that many Oberbanne in early 1934.
For those interested I specifiy:
Obergebiet 1 - Ost:

Gebiet 1 (Ostland) had four of them. No 5 and 6;
Gebiet 2 (Kurmark) had five of them. No 6;
Gebiet 3 (Berlin): had five of them. No 6;
Gebiet 4 (Schlesien): had three of them. No 4, 5 and 6;

Obergebiet 2 - Nord:

Gebiet 5 (Ostsee): had 3 of them. No 4, 5 and 6;
Gebiet 6 (Nordmark): had also 3 of them. So as Gebiet 5;
Gebiet 7 (Nordsee): as before;
Gebiet 8 (Niedersachsen): as before;

Obergebiet 3 - West:

Gebiet 9 (Westfalen): had six Oberbanne;
Gebiet 10 (Ruhr-Niederrhein): had also six Oberbanne;
Gebiet 11 (Mittelrhein): had three. So, no 4, 5 and 6;
Gebiet 12 (Westmark): had first three, but number 4 was added
Gebiet 13 (Hessen-Nassau): had five of them. No 6;
Gebiet 14 (Kurhessen): had only 2 Oberbanne. No 3, 4, 5 and 6;

Obergebiet 4 - Mitte:

Gebiet 15 (Mittellland): had just 2. No 3, 4, 5 and 6;
Gebiet 16 (Sachsen): had five. No number 6;
Gebiet 17 (Thüringen): had three. No 4, 5 and 6;

Obergebiet 5 - Süd:

Gebiet 18 (Franken): had four Oberbanne. No 5 and 6;
Gebiet 19 (Hochland): had three of them. No 4, 5 and 6;
Gebiet 20 (Württemberg): had four of them. No 5 and 6;
Gebiet 21 (Baden): had three. No 4, 5 and 6.

Independent Gebiet:

Gebiet 22 (Deutsch-Österreich): had three. No 4, 5 and 6.

Maybe HJ collectors will now better understand. In most districts
there were not much as four Oberbanne, let it be Oberbann 5 and 6.
Six Oberbanne only had the districts Westfalen and Ruhr-Niederrhein.
It would have been a great sight, seeing all those colors with the
pipings for the visored caps (but many boys did not even have a cap),
and above all the arm-patches when there was a meeting at Westfalen
or Ruhr-Niederrhein and there were members from all Oberbanne.
This will be obvious now!!

That defiantly clears up any confusion. Thank you very much for the detailed information!

Regards,
Lewis
