I have no answers, only questions. I like the klein stamp. Seems to suggest that there was a big one. I'm thinking that this a blazer pocket patch. Maybe the gross one is for the sport shirt. Never seen one. Been collecting this stuff for 47 years. Doug

This would have been worn on the sports vest and is a students' sports achievement patch. Whether it's an original I couldn't say unfortunately as I've no experience with them. Student sport had a long tradition prior to the Third Reich and along with all other aspects of life this too was assimilated in 1934 and placed under the control of the 'Institut für Leibesübung'. The system was quite similar to that of the HJ in that not only sport but also elements of military training and political ideology were included. From 1934 each student (male and female) was required to pass sporting tests in various disciplines during the first three semesters in order to qualify to continue onto the fourth semester. The first three semesters consisted of training and practice with the main test conducted at the end of the third semester. The test was called 'Leistungsprüfung' and I am assuming that this patch was awarded as a result of that test but I can't find a reference which confirms this yet. I'll keep looking though.

On another forum another collector said that he had seen several and one from Thuringen. It is UV negative but came from a collection. No real positive source. Everything else in the group was real but that does not guarantee anything. But I kind of like it. I'm kind of lightly into BDM stuff and assume that this would swing both ways. I was thinking that this organization was one that was taken over in the TR period making this patch a little on the rare side what with the swas and all. Anybody got pictures of pre or post TR ones in wear? Thanks for your help with this. I'll dig out a few more items to ponder as well if that would be of interest. Doug

I would love to get a good translation of this one. Just might help with the general understanding of what was going on here. Does this guy have an email address? Doug

Do you have a link for this Doug?

If the patch is related to the achievement testing at the end of the third semester then every high school would have produced a patch like this which is possibly why the guy you talked to has seen multiples. Needs nailing though. I found two university pamphlets from 1935 and 1939 which both mention the achievement tests as I mentioned a couple of posts up but sadly neither specifically mentions the patch. Perhaps your article will throw some more light on this.

Quick edit: found the academic paper you referenced. It's a 15 Euro download unfortunately

Found the guy on Facebook. Left a message. He has studied in US as well. My High School German is wearing a little thin at this date. In the University Pamphlets do they talk about the HOCHSCHULSPORT organization in both pamphlets? If so it, it would seem that it was not taken over. If they don't talk about the organization in both then it would seem that it had been taken over. If it had been taken over I would assume that the logo would of been some JH related thing and not the red army like eagle. Doug

Yes. The 'Hochschulsportordnung' was introduced on the 30th of October 1934 (revised 24th of April 1935). There had been a programme in existence prior to this which was introduced in 1933 but the October 1934 regulation formalised and expanded physical training and sport so 'Hochschulsport' and swastika would be correct for the patch.

Still haven't found anything concrete on the achievement test though but still looking. Certainly what I've been reading suggests strongly, as I said above. that successful completion of the test at the end of the third semester seems a good candidate for the award of this achievement patch.

What with the rarity of the patch I would think that it is starting to look like something in the 33-34 era rather than the years afterward. Performance Award? Are you thinking that everyone that passed the test got this award? And you had to pass the test to proceed on in school. Maybe this is rather like a Superior Performance Award. If everyone in the Hochschulsportordnung got this award why haven't we seen more of them? Over the years I have seen a lot of stuff. Never seen one of these before. A gentleman on another forum said that he had seen maybe 8 of the Berlin ones and a single Thuringen one. Anyone seen any others? Any on the west side of Germany? Our guys in the US Army got to Thuringen but not quite to Berlin. Now the organization is all over Germany but organized city by city. Was it all over Germany back in the 30s? Was it organized the same way? Lots of questions. Thanks for everything Gary. Let's hope we get to to add another sports award for the sports award collectors to collect. Doug

That's what I'm thinking Doug but as I say, I haven't found a reference which specifically links the word achievement (Leistung) to the tests at the end of the third semester. As ever, I'll keep looking though. I wouldn't think that we're looking at 1933 for the patch though. The pamphlets and other period stuff I've been reading show that that compulsory student sport was introduced in 1933 (2 hours per week) but that this was not uniform across the Reich. Berlin had the system in 1933 but in Jena it took until 1934 for example. My thoughts are that the patch would possibly have been introduced as part of the Hochschulsportordnung in 1934. No proof of that yet though.

Yeah. Regulations emanate from the center outward. In any case. This must of been a fairly short lived award. I googled Hochschulsportordnung and got a bunch of interesting hits. To bad my German is less than stellar. Thanks Doug

Berlin Auction House for History had one in Auction 71. Don't know if it is exactly the same. No picture I could get. Might not of sold. 130E No information. Doug

There's one on the Helmut Weitze site for 180E. Picture looks right. Don't know about the size. No size stamp. No information. I guess that there are a few out there. Doug

I found this reference in littlejohns book ,

it maybe of some help ,

cheers steve

Strangely, it took longer to sell than I had imagined. Plus, I don't think it was that expensive when you consider how much was in the grouping. Not to worry though, found a good home in the end.
