Here is a seemingly unremarkable HJ example marked RZM M7/38 for Paul Seilheimer. No motto as would be appropriate for this later construction messer. What is unusual is the deeply impressed stamping of AUFBAUSCHULE SAULGAU to the reverse body of the blade. I believe the marking stands is for the Aufbauschule für Jungen Saulgau in Baden-Württemberg. The scabbard leather has the often seen impressed LS with Oak Leaf trade mark.

If anyone has encountered similar knives or has information on this particular institution I would be very interested. Thoughts or comments are most appreciated ....

The national-socialist Aufbauschulen had six years of education after completion of seven years of primary school, and was finished with a degree equal to the high school (Arbitur). In 1936 the former Lehrerbildungsanstalten were abolished and their buildings used for the new Aufbauschulen. In Würtemberg Aufbauschulen were built in Nagold, Nürtingen and Saulgau and later in Künzelsau for boys, and for girls in Markgröningen and Schwabisch Gmund.

The LBA were not created until 1940 Henrik. Prior to that they were known as the Aufbaulehrgang, for example, Staatlicher Aufbaulehrgang Ermland (later: Lehrerbildungsanstalt Mehlsack). Saulgau was one of the Deutsche Heimschulen that were introduced on 24.8.1941. Is Aufbauschule another term for Aufbaulehrgang perhaps?

Well, I'm not an expert on this subject, so I'll refrain from further posting on this subject ... :yo:

Nice one, the mark on the leather strap is LFS, with the F in the oak leaf. It is often a bit obscure. No one knows at this time what the LFS stands for, but presumably the manufacturer of the leather hanger.

Regards

Russ

Well, all I wanted to do was to make the distinction between "Deutsche Aufbauschule" (a type of school that was already in existence when the NS took over in 1933) and the Staatlicher Aufbaulehrgang (later Lehrerbildungsanstalt) which was specifically for teacher training. You seemed to mix up those school types/purposes/times with the Deutsche Heimschule. That's all I was saying.

Thanks for your insight Russ. I wonder if it might be for Linden & Funke KG, Iserlohn who made slings for the K98k rifle as well as another leather goods ....?

I don't think it is Linden & Funke, as they were metal manufacturers. The sling
is marked by a leather manufacturer.

This is the Linden & Funke-symbol (below):

The dagger is marked M7/38, which is Paul Seilheimer from Solingen.
I do not have the time to go through all leather manufacturers to
find a match!

Located some additional information within the Staatsarchiv Ludwigsburg, Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg. Speaks to the Aubauschules and mentions Saulgau in a couple of areas. The on-line translation applications are not very accurate for some of this technical wording. Perhaps a member here can help with translation? Many thanks in advance!

Metern.

Hi,

As far as the matter of what Saulgau was, the excerpt repeats what we were saying earlier in that Saulgau was an Aufbauschule which later became a Deutsche Heimschule when these were introduced. The remainder of the excerpt describes student numbers and leading figures within the school and also the unification of the schools at Künzelsau and Saulgau.

The reason for HJ knives having Saulgau stamped on them remains a mystery however.
