On a dealer website, the attached cap tally was listed with the following description:

THIS IS A RARE "AUSTRIAN" MARINE HJ CAP TALLEY FOR THE REICHSSEESPORTSCHULE 4 WHICH WAS LOCATED IN NEUSIEDEL AM SEE; NEAR THE HUNGARIAN BOARDER. THIS SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED IN 1939 ; THE NAME WAS Admiral Wilhelm v. Tegetthoff.

Does anybody know if this information is correct as I was not aware that the school was located in Neusiedel AM See? If that is correct, it will be of interest to those tally collectors that mistakenly believed it was located elsewhere. Thanks, John

Hi John,

Yes, the location is correct according to the SHAEF report and to Buddruss (Totale Erziehung für den Totalen Krieg p1089). See here for our list of schools.

This source shows that Reichsseesportschule 4 was founded in 1939 in that location and that it received the name "Admiral Wilhelm v. Tegetthoff" in August of that year.

That is great information. Thank you Garry for the quick response. I note that Klosterneuburg is close by to Vienna also, I own both tallies, my only "Austrian" tallies. I did not realize the school tally was also Austrian but now I do. Here is a map and the two tallies from my collection. The school tally is not the same tally as the one on the dealer website. John

No probs John. Thought I'd add a period order just to show beyond any doubt that the school was indeed at that location. This order concerns itself with the filling of courses and with travel arrangements to the five schools in 1942:

Very nice. Do you have a full set of these MHJ school tallies John?

Well, that is a good question, but I have to defer to Garry on this. I am not sure to be honest.

Here is what I have:

First, schools 1 (I) and 2 (II)

Then what I "think" is school 3 (III).

All tears in the sweatband were there when I purchased the cap.

And 4 (IV), again, any tears, before I bought the cap. I am very careful with the sweatband due to how brittle they are at this point.

I do not have a "V" or a "VI" and maybe there are none, but if there is an example, I would be interested in seeing it. John

Confusingly, I also have this tally. This is not mine, I copied this from a dealer site, but I have one just like it. Therefore there were two tallies for this school, this one preceded the second version.

This is what that dealer had to say about it:

THIS IS A RARE EARLY TYPE HJ CAP TALLEY FOR REICHSSPORTSCHULE II H J SEEMOOS. SEEMOOS IS LOCATED ON THE BODENSEE; NEAR FRIEDRICHSHAFEN. THIS WAS THE SECOND HJ NAVY SCHOOL IN GERMANY; THE FIRST ONE WAS THE REICHSSPORTSCHULE I H J GORCH FOCK.

And from Garry's list you have these schools established:

Reichsseesportschule 1 "Gorch Fock". Prieros, Gebiet Mark-Brandenburg. (1)
Reichsseesportschule 2 Seemoos, Bodensee. (Pic 1)
Reichsseesportschule 3 "Admiral von Trotha". Ziegenort, Gebiet Pommern.
Reichsseesportschule 4 "Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthof". Neusiedel am See, Wien.
Reichsseesportschule 5 Eltville, Gebiet Hessen-Nassau.
Reichsseesportschule 6 Heisternest, Gebiet Danzig-Westpreußen.

So thanks to Garry and the dealer, I have a much better understanding of the tallies associated with the schools. John

SSS "Horst Wessel" (built 1936) was not a HJ Reichsseesportschule but served as the flagship of the Kriegsmarine sail training fleet. Between 1939 and 1942 it was docked in Stralsund (Mecklenburg) and used by the Marine-HJ as training ship. After the end of WWII SSS "Horst Wessel" was taken as reparation and is still serving today as USCGC "Eagle".

The ship on the pic is the "Albert Leo Schlageter", also belonging to the "Gorch Fock"-class and therefore looking identical to "Horst Wessel".

Little Note: The correct spelling of the location of Reichsseesportschule 4 is Neusiedl (typical Austrian, without the third "e").

Jack

And here is an interesting tally. It is not a children's tally, but a full size tally that was used during a propaganda film about Horst Wessel and as far as I know, one of a kind. I purchased this from Bernd Wedeking who wrote "Die Mutzenbander Der Deutschen Marine" and who is recognized as the foremost authority on German tallies from all periods of time.

As I recollect, he told me that the tally was worn by some of the MHJ boys instead of their normal MHJ tally for the film.

That's quite an impressive collection of tallies John :thumbup1:.

As I remember, Reichsseesportschule III in Ziegenort/Pommern was a docked sail training ship, the "Admiral von Trotha" - much smaller than "Gorch Fock" & Co, of course.
Unfortunately, I have some pictures of Schule I in Prieros/Mark only.
