The post-1939 appointment system used by the HJ and DJ can be a little confusing so here's a small 'ready reference'.
You can split the TR period into 2 parts for lanyards:
1933 to 1939 - Lanyards denoted rank only.
1939 to 1945 - Lanyards denoted appointment*.
