A nice pair of shoulder boards from Bann 437, located in Göppingen. I wonder if "Hohenstaufen" was an honorary name for Bann 437?

Hohenstaufen was a German noble family and later royal family with great influence during the Middle Ages.

Yes and no, Osvald. The Hohenstaufen is a mountain near Göppingen. On it, since the 11th century, was the ancestral castle of the Staufer dynasty, the dukes of Swabia, who for a good 100 years (1138-1254) provided the Roman-German king (and in some cases also became emperor).
The castle was destroyed in the Peasants' War in the 16th century.

The name of this Bann thus refers both to a scenic feature of the district and to important periods in German history.
Honorary names, on the other hand, were almost exclusively given in reference to "martyrs" of the Nazi movement, like Horst Wessel, Herbert Norkus etc.
On the other hand, the early Scharen, Fähnlein etc. (especially in the DJ because the boys were supposed to get a connection to the great German history at an early age) often had names like Frundsberg or other historical persons. The Staufers also fit in well here.

Thank you very much!
