Hello,

Long time TR collector, but new to HJ items. Of course I committed the cardinal sin and bought something unfamiliar to me without doing any research, but I figured it was relatively safe because it was from a reputable dealer I've bought good items from for years. However, after discovering this forum and browsing around I stumbled upon a thread pointing out the similarities in badges with these wavy defaced serial numbers. Mine seems to fall into the same serial number range, same M 1/101 maker, etc. No good?

Hello, newer collector here. I did the same and ended up with this hj badge with wavy lines crossing out the serial number. My badge appears to have a different number than yours, but I am also curious as to the authenticity. Hopefully someone else with more knowledge can shed some light on these crossed out badges?

This older thread contains the appraisal of Jo Rivett who was respected for his forensic inspections of TR badges.

He didn't like the badges with the defaced award serials. I mentioned on that thread that I had seen period information stating that the badges of HJ that had been expelled were to be sent back to the RJF and that the award serial was to be defaced but to this day I have been unable to find that exact reference again. With these "wavy line" badges I would certainly include Jo's expertise when weighing up whether to add one of them badges to a collection.
