What was used on the belt to connect the cross strap ? Like the wehrmact with a d ring ? I have a cross strap missing the belt attachments. Any help appreciated Thanks

Yes, from the very beginning, so-called Koppelschlaufen/belt loops or, as the RZM regulations call them in cumbersome administrative German, Koppelaufschiebeschlaufen :001_unsure:, were used.

Jack any idea how the mess tin was carried ? I see the canteen thru the d ring on breadbag ?
 
Well, only theoretically - I've never held one of those things in my hand and probably never will.
But I can ask the 1936 regulation about it.
The steel handle (to prevent rattling) has a Längsschlaufe/longitudinal loop through which the Kochgeschirr-Riemen/mess tin strap (made of leather) is pulled. You can see this with two of them in figure 2. It looks like these straps were pulled through the cross loops on the outside of the tornister.

By the way, the snap hook on the canteen was called the "Sicuro-Feldflaschenhaken/canteen hook" (Sicuro literally has to do with safety).
