Hello all

I would like to ask for the knowledge as to what his shoulder boards signify. He has one pip and a large V in roman numbers with coloured piping on his boards (which im guessing is impossible to tell what colour it is). Also nice thing to note is the piping on his cap looks to be a sort of thick cord?

Thank you all

Very nice early photo. He is wearing the SA buckle and no sleeve triangle as they had not yet been introduced. The strap shows that he was a member of (quite possibly the leader of) Gefolgschaft V (within a Bezirk that can't be further identified based on the photo). At this time the Gefolgschaft number was in roman numerals. The photo is very likely from 1932/early 1933 as in early 1932 the Reichsführer HJ issued detailed instructions for the reorganisation of the HJ. The previous Ortsgruppen were then to be designated as a Schar, Gefolgschaft or Bezirk depending on size. At that time the structures Bann and Unterbann did not yet exist. This is evidenced by a reorganisation published in April 1932 in Gau Südhannover-Braunschweig under the command of the later HJ Stabsführer Lauterbach where the new structure in his area consisted of (from biggest to smallest) Gau, Bezirk, Gefolgschaft, Schar. The Gefolgschaft covered a much larger area at that time when compared to the size of the Gefolgschaft post-July 1933. For example, in 1932 the area (Bezirk) of Göttingen was covered by only two Gefolgschaften (Gefolgschaft VI Göttingen and XXVIII Dransfeld).

The cord around the straps was the Gau colour (also known as Landesfarben).

Thank you so very much for this wonderful insight

A great early photo.
A standard shirt button was still used to fasten the straps...

Does this maybe help find the location?

Unfortunately not. As I say, it's impossible to know the location based solely on what we can see on the photo.
Sorry the photo link never uploaded. It’s the photographers name, but most likely will come to nothing

Nice. I found a reference to a commercial photographer called H. Leimkühler who worked with Krupp and a photography group on a project that was exhibited in Essen in 1938. I'll try to find out more but he seems to be a good lead.

An example of Landesfarben piping (white and green, Saxony)
