...and then the residents had their peace for another month. There are many eyewitness accounts who were very annoyed by the constant collections in the long run. On the other hand, many felt they had done something good for their poorer fellow citizens (the NSV/Welfare was the main recipient of the donations).
The most important sources of income were
- donations from companies/organisations,
- donations in kind (especially in the early years),
- "sacrifices of wages and salaries" - 10 per cent of the payroll tax was withheld, and this for 6 months of a year.
In 1940, a total of almost one billion Reichsmark was collected in this way - at least five times that in today's currency, even if such a conversion is always somewhat problematic.

If anyone is interested in the historical - the HJ's financial share of the WHW collection was never greater than a little over 2 per cent, in contrast to the herb collection, for example.

I used to have this one in my collection:
On the numbers Jack, I found this transcript of a Goebbels speech made on 10.10.1939 in the Sportpalast Berlin on the occasion of the opening of the 1939/40 WHW. It gives some numbers for 1937/8 and 1938/9 which differ from your sources plus a grand total for all previous WHW. Odd that the numbers differ but I remember researching the numbers of Reichssieger, Gausieger and Kreissieger badges awarded in the RBWK some years ago and found the same thing happening.

It's interesting that the figures differ slightly, and especially that they are somewhat lower for Goebbels.
I don't know the source from the Bundesarchiv/Federal Archives myself, but I can only explain it in such a way that these were produced somewhat later as an overview ("Kriegsgeschichte der HJ" is mentioned there?) and something else was added.
