Not much is known about this subject so I thought I would start a thread to see if we can prove or disprove a theory that I have. Advertisements in a Jungvolk publication

the whole of 1932 only ever show a leader rune for sale and another for sports clothing. No other type of rune is shown. The only other item offered is the DJV (later DJ) metal membership badge. Of the many photos where it could possibly be seen, only one photo in the 1932 issues of the publication shows a boy wearing a sleeve rune. Clearly to be seen is that the two boys with do not have a sleeve rune. The sports rune is likely to be the one worn by this boy on his shorts (right).

Here's the organisation of the DJ in Apr/May 1932 and also the ranks in use at that time:

This shows that it was not just the adults who were the leaders. A young boy in the rank of Jungenschaftsführer, for example, could also wear the leader rune.

A little more on the leader rune:

Between the 14th of April and the 23rd of April 1933 a national conference for DJ leaders was held in Kahla. The instructions for the event list the uniform that attendees were to wear (see scan below):

As I said though, a larger sample size of photos from 1931 to early-33 would bring more clarity.
