Hello all,

I finally received this photo after a two-month wait, and it was well worth it.

There’s plenty to enjoy in this one. I checked the Ruhr Niederrhein section in the Bann book, and the only two-digit numbers listed are 57 and 60. I believe I can make out a 9—definitely chain-stitched—but I can’t identify the first digit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And, of course, any additional insight in anything else is always welcome.

That's a fantastic portrait of a Reiter-HJ Scharführer wearing the special sleeve patch. He is wearing the Arbeiterjugend badge as an outward sign of his early membership of the HJ. This was replaced in 1934 by the HJ honour badge. He also has the gold Litze on his sleeve triangle which shows that he was a member of the HJ before 30.1.1933. If he had owned one I would think that he would be wearing the Potsdam badge so he is likely to have joined the HJ sometime between 3.10.1932 and 29.1.1933.

Congrats. The Bann number is 39 (Düsseldorf) by the way.

Thank you for the clarification, I see where I went wrong. Did you have to buy the honour badges or were they gifted?
 
Actually, looking at that again it does look like he's wearing the HJ honour badge. What do you think? If so that obviously pushes his entry into into the HJ to before Potsdam so sometime before 2.10.1932.

The awardees initially didn't have to pay anything for their badges but in 1935 the RJF introduced a price of 0.35RM to help cover the overall costs. Replacement badges cost 1RM.

I am quite certain that he is wearing his honour badge
