I just bought this small paper grouping. Unfortunately the badge is missing.

Interesting related pieces, Wim. Love Love these kinds of sets because they give you much more background of a person. Maybe one day you will also come across the badge.

Interesting to see the abbreviation "Jg" ("Junggenosse"), similar to "Pg" ("Parteigenosse").

Were the boys automatically members of the NSDAP, after joining the HJ?

That would be my humble question..?

Micha

Hi Micha,

No, there was no automatism. It was also expressly forbidden to apply pressure to join.

This was the procedure after the end of the total ban on new members from 1937 onwards.
Generally, the prospective member had to make an application, sign it and fill out a questionnaire.
If the decision was positive, the party candidate (Anwärter) received a membership card after 3 months at the latest, and after at least one year the membership book, always provided that the dues were paid diligently.

In January 1944, the minimum age for HJ and BDM members to join the party was lowered to 17. The questionnaire and fees were waived for them. In exchange, the HJ superior had to confirm in writing that the application was voluntary.

Jg. was used to designate the lowest rank of the HJ, the Hitlerjunge.

Hi Jack,

I wasn't aware of that, so thanks for your detailed answer.
How about the "Jungmannen" in the NPEAs and the boys in the Adolf Hitler Schule.

How was the takeover into the NSDAP handled at the time?

Basically, it happened in the same way, with the subtle difference that the transfer rate for them was probably 100 per cent. Overall, the NS identification of the youth was higher anyway due to their socialisation, and in this case, it was the coming leadership elite.
I know that the transfer was supposed to take place at least in 1944 in a ceremonial setting on 20 April.

Hi Jack,

"I know that the transfer was supposed to take place at least in 1944 in a ceremonial setting on 20 April."

Very interesting, maybe you could elaborate further on that..?

The 20th of April was the so-called "Führergeburtstag".

Hi Micha,

Of course you are right with your correlation of this day. 20 April was no coincidence, just like 9 November, it was a classic day for promotions, for example.
I must correct myself here: in 1944, the induction ceremony took place on 24 February, but it became effective in April.
Membership dues were no longer paid and were to be resumed on 1 May 1945. Well.

On the website of the Bundesarchiv/Federal Archives you can find an interesting virtual exhibition on the subject, with numerous illustrated documents. Just enter "PG - Zum Mitgliedschaftswesen der NSDAP" into the Google search.
Some of it is not easy to read because of the quality, but it is quite exciting.

Thank you Jack,

my german grandfather Hans Westerholt joined the NSDAP on 1. May 1937, the typical date for a "late" party member.

"1st of May
German Reich 1937 – The NSDAP had lifted their membership ban for the German Reich...
"

Timetable: "1st of May - German Reich 1937 – The NSDAP had lifted their membership ban for the German Reich.

At the time, the man was already an officer in the labor services.
It was his desire to rise to the higher ranks, the rank of captain was not enough for the man.
In 1943 the grandfather was finally promoted to the rank of major, with the rank of a "Arbeitsführer", his way was open, up to a rank of a general...

A German "career", a follower. ("Mitläufer")
What should I say decades later, I can't think of anything, nothing at all. I would probably have acted similarly, my grandfather was born in 1906, I was born exactly 50 years later, in 1956.

"Opa Hans" sold his unbelieving soul to the devil, for a career, that's how it was.
