Marine-HJ cap tally collection

Well, that's a match! Here the tally in wear. Thanks for posting. It's also nice for me to see the tally of a photo which I have!

....a boy from Gefolgschaft 18 in the only designated Marine-HJ-Bann. This was in Hamburg and it had the number 202. The highest number known to me is 21.

Hi Daniel. Nice to see you back on the forum. I'll look into it again tomorrow to see if I can find more but I only have three Marinebann 202 Gefolgschaften in my list currently. However, one of them takes you up from 21 to 23 :thumb:

MHJ-Gef. 23/202 Hamburg-Billstedt (received its Gefolgschaft flag in 1939).

A couple of you will already know this but Bann 202 was disbanded in Jan/Feb 1944 with all units being distributed across the remainder of the Hamburg Banne.

Many thanks for your input, Garry. Yes, it has been a while since my last visit here. However, I was made aware of this thread and found the posts very interesting and am hoping that more members are tuning in and show of few of their beauties.
Actually I didn't know that. Is any information available why this Bann was sort of dissolved?
Hopefully I will find time over the weekend to submit the other Gefolgschaftsnumbers known to me from Hamburg.
Although I need to ask this naive question: can it not be assumed that every single Gefolgschaft had a tally, up to number 23 at least (since '23' is the highest number of this Bann known so far)?

And here is my little contribution to the presentation of cap tallies

Michael,
please allow me a question: is this Goslar tally that one which was once in Lothar Hartung's collection?

Hi Daniel

I don't know, but it could be that our old friend Lothar had it in his collection - he collected A LOT of HJ. By the way I think Lothar has been dead for many years.

I bought it from a dealer in England, and I don't know where he got it from.

Hi Daniel,

It is stated in the period source that it was necessary to dissolve Bann 202 due to a reorganisation within Gebiet 26 Hamburg. Between 1943 and 1944 the number of Banne within Gebiet Hamburg was reduced from eleven to six*. The Bann 202 Gefolgschaften were incorporated into these six Banne in 1944.

* 31, 76, 417, 420, 421 and 422

Many thanks, Garry. Very valuable information which are absolute news to me! To be honest, not a single MHJ tally of the other Bann-Numbers is known to me.
Does anyone has a photo of a naval HJ boy of these Bann-numbers, meaning other than 202, or any other photographic evidence?
I need to raise doubt that any tallies were produced that late in the war and distributed in a town which was 80% destroyed.

It's certainly the least difficult to find...

Good morning and my sincere apologies for the delayed reply.

Well, I have not quite the "MHJ KIEL 1" in wear but of the 2nd Gefolgschaft from Kiel as first pattern tally. However, and for the purpose of completion, I do have a photo of the 1st Gefolgschaft as 2nd pattern tally.

Keep 'em coming!

Regards

Daniel

Good afternoon Gents,

well, the Berlin 2 was a hard one. Within the 16 "MHJ BERLIN" portraits in my collection, there is not a single one from Gefolgschaft "2". Although I have the tally as well, a portrait seems to be impossible at the point.

Another "Berlin 2" was introduced to the forum some years back, which had surprisingly a RZM tag attached to the reverse. This was a "first" for me as it was unknown that cap tallies would have had such tag attached.

@Garry: could you kindly have a look on the Gefolgschaft-locations, where the 2nd one of Berlin was situated? I guess this is a difficult one to answer as Berlin had so many Bann-numbers, or?

As a substitute I allow myself to introduce a few other portraits from Berlin. One of them doesn't have a Gefolgschafts-number at all ...!

My lists are pretty weak when it comes to the Berlin Banne and I only have two MHJ-Gefolgschaften for Berlin so far but both are from different Banne so you're right, pinning down a location for "Berlin 2" is going to be hard.

I just received this postcard. Does anyone have a Rostock or Varel cap-tally ?

Sorry that it took me so long to reply.
1. Well, in regard of the Rostock tally: this is a bit of an odd one as we might assume that Rostock had a fairly strong presence of Naval youth. However, the photos are pretty rare and also no tally is kicking about in any collection as far as I'm aware.
Also, the first word is a bit of a question mark to me for the following reason: Rostock is and always had been a "Hansestadt". However, the word Hansestadt seems not to have found its way on any cap tallies. In the example of Wismar the inscription was "M.H.J. SEESTADT WISMAR". So, by comparing the length of the words "Hansestadt" vs "Seestadt" my guess is that this is also the case with Rostock because the "t" being situated roughly at the front of the cap, the left section must be equally long to the visible "- Rostock 5/90". Below a snip of another postcard I have, unfortunately not giving a good hint on the first word either.

2. I can't be of great help here either - the only photo of a 1st pattern Varel below here - with the further designation "i.O." (in Oldenburg). I only have a "6/59 Varel 6/59" tally, unfortunately no photo of this tally available right now.

Until 1945, Rostock's name suffix was actually Seestadt, and that's what it says on the tally. I can well remember having seen such a photo somewhere, oddly enough also as in your picture with a hyphen in between, i.e. Seestadt-Rostock.
