Any information at all will be much appreciated. I'm most interested in the name on the book, possible origin i.e. Germany, Austria, or somewhere else, what level of schooling. Is it possibly from a youth camp? I think the name is Ossi Karner but I have misread german handwriting before. Is Ossi a nickname? If so what is it short for? My ultimate goal is identifying the original owner but I'm not very hopeful. I have partially translated the typed page on jews. But that is as far as I have gotten.

Hi there,

Ossi could be a shortened version of a name beginning with "Os" e.g. Oswald. It also appears to be a finnish christian name. I think I'm correct in saying that this boy will have been 10/11 years old when he was using this book. We know it happened of course but it's still strange to see the pages that deal with "Rassenlehre" and the discussion of the Jews and their supposed characteristics. I'm not good with Sütterlin but we do have some guys on the forum who may help out with translation.

Thanks so much for the input! I have been searching German and Austrian records trying to find this guy, but if he was born in Finland and died outside of those two countries those data bases wouldn't do me any good. I have never seen a book like this one before or after I purchased it. This one will definitely get passed down. I look forward to learning more about it. If there is enough interest I can take picture of more pages and post them as well.

I also think that the name is a diminutive of Oswald, even if this is rather unusual on a school notebook .
It's more difficult with the class level. The Roman V could be the Quinta in grammar school, i.e. the 2nd grade in that type of school (age: 12). I don't see any contradiction with the topics on the first two pages - fungi (including some well-known species) and carnivorous plants on the following page.
What doesn't fit, if the last page is in the same booklet: the Mendelian rules of inheritance (and the typewritten pages). Then I would rather say: 4 years of primary school plus 5 years of secondary school (that Roman five) makes in total 9th grade (age: 15). That would also fit into the picture in terms of the handwriting, in which some peculiarities can already be recognised.

There are a bunch of pages in the notebook, probably over 25 but I haven't ever counted. The page that doesn't seem to fit might be because of my choice of which ones to photograph. If you all are interested I could takes pictures of all of the pages to post. All pages including type written I received together. I felt like the typed pages where out of place too. Why teach jewish history in a biology class? Would that fit more into

Does this seem like it is put together to sell to you? Like maybe someone started with a regular biology notebook and added in the typed pages to give it value? I am also curious if it's possible the typed pages were just handouts the student slipped into the book due to a lack of a better place at the time. I wonder if there is anyway to authenticate the typed pages. I feel like the one on the origin of jews could have some value if real. Ultimately does anything reek of fake to you? Like any good collector I don't want anything fake in my collection. The lack of similar things available on the market scares me a bit.

Hello, I translated a page.

However, I'm missing two words in the header.

Best regards, Pele

Hi,
First of all to reassure you: I don't believe that anything has been fiddled here for the sake of a better sale. Rather that the chap had packed up all his remaining school notes. Who keeps all their school things? That would also explain why different subjects and grades (in my opinion) are combined here.
I can't say for sure, I don't have the curricula of the time, I was just comparing it with the material I knew a few decades later. And fungi and Mendel do not fit into the same grade level.

By the way, the missing words in the heading on the page that Pele kindly transcribed for you are Sporenbildg. (i.e. Sporenbildung) and Basidienschichte[n] with a corrected typo.

I'm so glad this is the case. I can't thank you and the others enough. I'm relatively new at collecting things from WW2. I can only hope to reach your level of knowledge one day and contribute to the community myself.
