The Flemish NSJV archive and reference thread.

So, instead of posting everything in the old threads all the time I figured I could just as well create a new one and post everything in this one.
I’ll be adding the one’s I showed before as well, so this thread can also be used as a reference guide if necessary.
I’ll start of with the latest items that where added and I haven’t posted before first though.

This was donated last Saturday after helping a former member move house, and discovering these in the attic. They had just been there since 1943 and where completely forgotten about.
So after the excitement of discovering them , we where blown away once more , as the owner donated them to the archives, which is an experience that takes collecting these items to a whole other level actually , adding something you bought to your collection is nice, getting it from the person who used to wear or carry it, that’s unique and something you’ll be grateful for till the end of your days.

It’s a flagpole topper obviously , a couple of leadership cords and the accompanying shoulder boards, together with a period photograph of both the owner , and the topper as well.

Next up, is something I managed to locate already a couple of month’s ago , but only last week thought about again, being very lucky that they still where at the same place I initially found them. (Stupid memory loss )

This is a lion shield of the type that was worn by the “Germanische Landdienst” , which is basically the same as the Landdienst der HJ for the official Hitlerjugend was , but then for the youth of Flanders and Holland .
These shield would afterwards have been worn by the official Flemish HJ as well , but they where initially designed for being used by the Germanische Landdienst, so I’m posting them here.

Keep in mind that what we’re looking at here are typical Flemish created pieces that where usually homemade, and that something as a textbook example for pre-1943 pieces simply doesn’t exist, and that it’s impossible finding 2 that are exactly the same.
There is however the typical Flemish construction of these items, which together with the materials being used makes it perfectly possible to identify if a piece is a period original or not , especially when you have held a few in your hands already. It’s Flanders, rules and strict regulations simply don’t work here, and you’re going to have to be able to think outside the box, or in this case out of the textbook if you want to able playing this game.

Anyway, i’m just showing this one, as ofcourse I failed to take more photographs, but the guy I had them from had a small amount of these , some clearly worn and tunic removed , and others clearly unused. They came from the estate of a former member of the NSJV who later became one of the founders of the VNJ (Vlaams Nationaal Jeugdverbond) , which is basically the post-war successor of the NSJV , that still exists today…
But more about them in a thread I’ll be starting one of these days about the post-1945 youth organizations of Flanders part of the archive.

We’re still debating how we’re gonna do it with the ones that we’re not gonna keep ourselves, but there is one thing that’s certain, we absolutely don’t need all of them , and the majority will actually be going to new owners within the next couple of days.
But until then , here’s one of them now already.
And I’m posting another one for camparison that’s been in another private collection, with full credits going to the owner, Luc de Bast.

Next Item’s acquired recently, a banner and trumpet flag, originally used by the AVNJ (Algemeen Vlaams Nationaal Jeugdverbond) and continuously used by the NSJV after the AVNJ , Jong Dinaso and Rex Youth Vlaanderen where merged into the united youth organization which was the NSJV.
Also a period photograph of another trumpet flag we have in the archive. And behind it yet another , which has managed to elude us , but rest assured , if one still exists, we’ll find it !
With these 2 previously unknown to us. The counter is now at 5 trumpet banners known to have existed. I’ll share the other’s here as well for reference and completion purposes.

Thanks , we’re working on it but with everything we’re finding momentarily and new material is added to the archive very frequently, we decided to put it on hold for a little while because we want it to be as complete as possible.

Thanks , there definitely was for a short period of time but with the unification of the Nationalist youth movements it got swallowed up together with the Vlaamsche Jeugd , the Jong Dinaso , and the AVNJ , to form the NSJ (Nationaal Socialistische Jeugd) and later the NSJV (Nationaal Socialistisch Jeugd Verbond).


Let’s continue with a very rare , and in my opinion also one of the most interesting pieces in our archives. The boys in the NSJV weren’t issued any kind of knife or dagger, which doesn’t mean they didn’t wear one ofcourse. Usually this would be some kind of Belgian made army or homemade piece , but sometimes after attending a wehrsport camp in Germany they brought back a HJ fahrtenmesser. And in the case of this one , I guess the boy or maybe even his father decided to pimp it up a little bit…

Long overdue so it’s about time I shared something with all of you so how about some musical instruments…

I found these 2 marching drums in the wild a couple of weeks ago for what you would normally pay for 2 beers and an already pre-chewed pack of bubblegum.
These are early 1930’s AVNJ drums but where continued to be used by the NSJV afterwards as well.

The fact that I found them proves that you don’t have to be beautiful to be lucky .., which means there’s still hope for all you ugly f*****s as well.
Keep hunting and you never know what you could be taking home at the end of the day.

For completion purposes I’ll post a couple of photos of a few other instruments we have in our archives as well.
And also one of the yellow landsknecht that’s on display in the Brussels War and Military Heritage Museum.

Hello, are those real pictures and you colored them?

Hi , first of all sorry for the late reply , and no they’re just screenshots from a Flemish WW2 movie called “Wil” .

I’m to “old school” for stuff like that (I still make notes using pen and paper) and I’m also lacking the time to learn it , but you gave me a wonderful idea with that question.
Having them colored in would take some of the already great photographs (like the 2 attached ones) we have to an even higher , spectacular level.

I guess it’s the highest time to put the wife or the oldest daughter to work.

On a sidenote , the counter of identified NSJV trumpet flags climbs from 5 to 6.
