How do you display a shoulder strap with a button "attached"?

I see straps displayed with buttons, but I never see the back side to show how the button is held in place...

If you know how its done, can you share pics of the backside?

I am looking to replicate this.

In earlier decades, people simply threaded a broken matchstick (as it would otherwise be too long) through the shank of the button.
The shoulderstraps were then glued to the back panel of the display case, or sometimes nailed on.

However, a thicker wire or a smaller nail would certainly work just as well to hold the button in place.

Hopefully we aren't gluing them to the backing any longer though but I agree with you the small match stick idea works great!

I use a simple paper clip and it hangs nicely.

See attached pictures - I know it's an Army shoulder strap, but it illustrates the hanging method the best way (y) .

Of course, from today’s perspective – and especially from a collector’s point of view – that might sound rather shocking. But back then, the insignia had little value, and the aim was for the recruits to quickly learn the different ranks.
