Thank you for showing these and the nice time line.
Does anyone have old photos of this place to compare these?
In 1929, at the corner of Torstraße and Prenzlauer Allee, Berlin’s first credit-based department store—Kaufhaus Jonaß—opened. It offered customers a novel way to shop: pay one-quarter upfront, and pay the rest in monthly installments.
However, when the Nazis came to power, the Jewish owners were dispossessed. By 1934 the building had been repurposed as the headquarters of the Hitler Youth. After the war, it transitioned into the central nerve center of East Germany’s communist party, housing top-level leadership and party archives.
Following reunification, the property was returned to the families of the original owners. After years of vacancy, it underwent a careful restoration and reopened in 2010 as Soho House Berlin—a luxurious creative club and hotel, complete with a rooftop swimming pool. Today, you can indeed swim on top of what was once the headquarters of the Hitlerjugend in berlin.
